Kelly taught Theatre, Drama, Speech, and Literary Arts at Eillmar Senior High School for 29 years. He operated a photography studio in Willmar from 1978 -2004. He currently produces portrait and fine art photography. In addition to this work, he is working experimentally in the area of video and video editing.
